gimp is free after you download it go to deviantart.com and search gimp signature tutorials and your off 
anything you need can be found on deviant

id be lost without photoshop lol
but i made some sweet stuff in gimp as well

I use gimp but photoshop looks more better (I never tried photoshop but seen pictures made by photoshop) my pictures are made from gimp and is pretty decent tutorials are from either youtube or deviantart.com and if you need advice help assistance or anything talk to the design team they are very helpful and encourging in creating sigs

meh photoshop is expensive as far as i heard. and signature making is just another one way of me just wasting my freetime so right now upgrading is not what im thinking about. although Photoshop is a better program then Gimp.
Gimp in the other hand is free and provides lots of very useful tools to create a signature. but doesn't have the complete set as what photoshop provides...but i never had photoshop so I can't tell you which is really better. but as far as seeing signature tutorials comparing gimp against photoshop, photoshop wins.
