I think it's best to have a high elevation, covered but not smothered. If you got canned air, I'd dust it when necessary.

I don't think having it in the open is better due to having no dust umbrella, and I think if it's in the open the fans generate a lower air pressure to keep dust from sticking or settling, and less cooling.
