You're a recruit for the first 7 days which is a "feeling out" period between you and the clan. Once the 7 days is up you will be promoted to private.
From that point on it is up to your general's discretion to give you promotions. They are earned so don't think by asking it will speed up the process. Have a talk with one of your captains if not the general to discuss what it takes to be promoted, each general and clan is different.

I became a lieutenant in about 1 month after joining the clan and just missed being a captain. this was accomplished by always being helpful and communicating well, show dedication to your clan, posting on the forums (especially for my clan), and showing leadership. if you do these 3 things you'll rise fast in the clan.

just show interest and leadership its what most ppl are looking 4 among the clans if you can do this you will surely become a higher rank
