This class does not mean you are getting a promotion but it does help you to better prepare for when a promotion does come. This is something I choose to do because I enjoy improving our community and individuals and watching them both become successful. In the end improving our community is the main goal.

Section I: Communication

Leaders must communicate with those below them; they must also be able to listen to those above them. Always remember communication is a two way street. If a leader tells members what is going on, and what needs to be done but doesn't listen to anyone, they are not communicating; they are delegating.

Who can tell me the main form of communication within XG? Forums
The forums are our primary source of communication. We all need to try and get on the website daily. There is a lot of important private messages being sent out, and we all need to monitor the forums often.

What are some other ways in which we can communicate? Xbox Live, PM's, Friends list, Meetings

Squad Practices:
Should be used to discuss your squads tactics and train your members on how to work together in the game, these should not only be fun but also informative. Captains should work closely with Lieutenants and go into each practice with a plan, but don't forget your members might have ideas to improve your plan, so listen to them and work with them. The more input they have the more vested and involved they will become in the squad and in the clan as a whole.

Squad meetings:
While these meetings are to inform your members what new events and happenings are going on in XG passed down to you from your General. These meetings are also the time to hear from your members what you can do to make the clan better for them. Clan meetings do not have to be boring, they can be a fun and time tempered by your leadership. You can entertain as well as inform your members and learn yourself who is a potential leader in your squad.

Communication Do's and Don’ts

It’s not just what you do, but what you don’t do that makes you better at communication.

DO NOT:
  • Interrupt speakers or finish their sentences for them. It’s a sure sign you’re not listening.
  • Argue with someone that’s angry. Let people express their frustration, then try discuss the issue calmly.
  • Forget to thank people when they share ideas.
  • Always assume it’s up to you to solve a problem.
  • Put people on the defensive. If there’s a problem, focus first on the solution, then on determine how to prevent it from happening again.

DO:
  • Paraphrase their statements, beginning with a phrase such as, “So what you’re saying is...”
  • Ask questions to clarify the situation and demonstrate to the speaker that the message is not clear.
  • Use examples to illustrate your point.
  • Tell stories to support your message. This helps the speaker remember your point.

Section II: Leadership

“The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born.”
- Warren G. Bennis

Most leaders are not great leaders and becoming a great leader does not happen by birth or by accident. It takes dedication, good decision making, and a lot of learning experience.

"Leadership is the ability to grasp a dynamic vision, and by example inspiring others to follow it. It means being the decisive one, even if it means sometimes being wrong. It means admitting mistakes, while maintaining a focus on the goal."
-Andrew Steffen '08

We ,as leaders, must be able to guide our members to do great things. Guide them to grow their squads. A growing squad leads to a growing clan. There will be speed bumps along the way, such as issues that need dealt with, it will take a solid leader to handle these issues with a level head and unbiased opinion.

We will start with the aspects of a leader.
Ask each member to give one quality of leadership.
TRUST & RESPECT
Communication
Enthusiastic
Confidence
A COOL HEAD
Focus on Key Elements
Motivation & INNOVATION
Improve their Skills

As a leader you must show members how to succeed, not just hand out orders and wait for them to be done. Members want to see the leadership doing what needs to be done. For example, Recruiting. All clans need recruits, but if leadership says "Go recruit" and we just keep playing, what is the members motivation? We must lead by example. If we go out with a few of our members and recruit, it builds the trust and respect of those members we are working with.

"We must become the change we want to see." - Mahatma Gandhi

What makes a person want to follow a leader? People want a guide by whom they respect and who has a clear sense of direction. Respect is earned, never given. A sense of direction is achieved by conveying a strong vision of the future.

As a leader, you must know your responsibilities and have a solid familiarity with the responsibilities of other ranks.

You must search for ways to guide your squad to new heights. And when things go wrong, as they sometimes do, do not blame others. Analyze the situation, take corrective action, and move on to the next challenge.

Dealing with issues is the most tedious job in the leadership position. When dealing with issues be sure to keep a cool head and to talk to each member involved individually to get the full story. Always have a peer with you while handling an issue so nothing can be turned around. Talk with your peers and get their opinion on what should be done. We are a team, and we should utilize each others knowledge and past experiences.

Running a successful Squad:
Clans are made up of one or more squads.
Each Squad is ran by 1 Captain, and the success or failure of a squad falls squarely on the shoulders of that squad's Captain. While Generals are over an entire Clan the Captains work with the General to run and oversee their Squad.

Squads needs to be comprised of members who game together. As a Captain you are here to ensure that this is happening and, if needed, to transfer a member to another squad in your clan. This is done by having both Captains as well as the General of the Clan agreeing on it. A member may need to be transferred to another clan if your clan does not play the same game as the member. This is done with both Generals and Section leader(s) approval.

Can a leader be a follower? Of course!
A leader is someone who can follow. A captain is a leader over his/her squad, but they follow their general. A general is a leader over his/her clan, but follows their section leader.

Section III: Basic XG Knowledge

This section is designed to give you ,as leaders, the basic knowledge you will need to succeed as well as teach your members.

1) The Foundation of XG

The Honor Code is the foundation of Xiled Gaming whether SYN, KoG, XGC, XDC, or XGG. it is what we all agree to follow as well as what sets us apart from other clans and communities

THE HONOR CODE FOR YOUR DIVISION CAN BE FOUND
Xiled Gaming Forums > XILED GAMING COMMUNITY > WELCOME TO XILED GAMING
Everything You Need to Know about Xiled Gaming

Can anyone tell me the differences between the 5 Divisions?

XGC~ Xiled Gaming Clan is the 18 & up division for mature gamers with a strict honor code upholding a professional gaming atmosphere.
XGG~ Xiled Gaming Girls is the all ages female gamer division.
SYN~ SYNdicate is the 16 and over underground gamers with a honor code allowing trash talking and retaliation.
KoG~ Kings of Gaming are the recreational gamers of all ages who have a strict honor code, to ensure an all ages environment.
XDC~ Xiled Design Clan are the designers of all the sigs and banners on the website as well as the news and other multimedia projects.

2) The 3 Core Values of Xiled Gaming

Honor ~ Be honest and truthful in dealings with peers, leaders and followers
Courage ~ Have the courage to make decisions in the best interest of the XG community
Commitment ~ Be committed to positive change and constant improvement for yourself and the XG community

3) Violations of the Honor Code

Just remember that a violation of the Honor Code will earn a Gamer a warning; two warnings and you will be banned from the community. Cheating will be grounds for an immediate removal. Make sure to involve your General whenever dealing with an Honor Code Violation.

4) Recruitment Process

There is no need to fill a quota, your main goal as a recruiter should be quality before quantity. Meaning we want the quality recruits, because they will become a quality member. Quality recruits will also ensure a quality gaming atmosphere. This quality atmosphere is what XG was founded to create.
XG sees a quality gamer as someone who possesses:
- Sportsmanship
- Respect
- Fair Play

When a member is recruited and signs up on the website they MUST agree to 3 things, these are the Rank structure, the honor code and the forum rules and guidelines.

Do you know where to Find Forum Rules and Guidelines
Xiled Gaming Forums > XILED GAMING COMMUNITY > WELCOME TO XILED GAMING > Everything You Need to Know about Xiled Gaming - Forum Rules - General Guidelines

5) Leaders of XG

What does the XS, XD, XC, and XI stand for ?
XS = Xiled Section Leader
XD = Xiled Division Leader
XC = Xiled Community Leader
XI = Xiled Council members

The leaders of XG make the decisions affecting Xiled Gaming as a whole. Council members are identified by an XI after their name.

Who can name some council members? XGC x0 0 7x XI, XGC BlkKnght XI, XGC xOTTOx XI, XGC HADES XI, XGC xVIPERx XI, XGC COLESLAW XI, XGC KNIGHT XI, and XGC CAVIEZEL XI.
Can anyone name the 2 XI's that were promoted to the Rank? XGC xVIPERx XI & XGC BlkKnght XI
Can anyone name the one XI who was recruited into XG? XGC xVIPERx XI

Section IV: Promotions

It is our job as leaders in XG to keep an eye out for future leaders. Squads should be following a basic configuration know in the community as "The Optimum Squad Configuration." this configuration is 1 Captain, 1 Lieutenant , 2 Sergeants, and 6 Privates. But that's not the only configuration you can have there’s all kinds of way to do but the way XG has found it to be the easiest is with the optimum configuration. 2 sergeants and 6 privates put the sergeant to private ratio at 1:3, this is important to remember. You will also notice that recruits are not in this figure. This is due to the fact that they are not members of the community as of yet. It is important that promotions are given to the best candidate, not the person you play with the most, as well as, the member who best represents XG and is upholding the honor code. Be sure to also look at their meeting attendance and activity on the forums.

Splitting your Squad:
As your Squad grows in numbers and your Lieutenant becomes ready to branch off to form their own squad remember these things:
Your General as well as your Section Leader are here to make this transition smooth. Squads of 12 - to 18 members need to consider splitting. When the Captain and the General agree that your Lieutenant is ready for promotion ,and will succeed without you, they will become responsible for their own squad as well as training up their own Lieutenant. Then the successful process will start all over again. This big brother mentality is what we are looking for. Once a Captain has successfully split his squad at least once they may be considered for promotion to General.

Section V: What Not To Do

1) Micro Managing

To micro manage your members is getting involved where you are not needed, doing peoples jobs for them, not giving people the freedom to succeed or fail on their own, and not holding members accountable for the members they are over. Give your members some responsibilities, see how they do and if they fail, talk to them about what could they have done differently. Ask for help on minor issues from your Lieutenant, let them run a squad meeting and practice. You are in the position you are to train future leaders, if you do their job for them they will never learn.

2) Don't be Petty

We are a gaming a community, you should not be solely worried about that next promotion. Leaders in this community are gamers that have taken on more responsibility. By only focusing on that next promotion you may keep others from succeeding. Some examples of being petty are: hoarding recruits to your squad instead of spreading them out to benefit the clan, holding your Lieutenant back from promotion because you don't want to train another one, or recruiting members that are not a fit for your division just to build numbers and try to move up.

Open for Questions...

--------- In closing.------------

We all work together to ensure two things happen in XGC, XDC, KoG, SYN, and XGG: to ensure it thrives and grows in a professional and organized manner, to establish and maintain a fun environment, free of trash talking and cheating. It would be impossible to ensure these two things happen, as we get bigger without training and trusting our leaders.
