Wii Sports is a game that anyone can pick up regardless of age or gaming experience and have a blast with. Whenever you think about a Wii this is the game you picture; Its interactive fun for the whole family! Come on, whats better than having your mother and father in-law come over to your house and you lay a beat down on them with the boxing game? You know, its just good, clean family fun...LOL Its a collection of 5 simple games; tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing. It can be a little short on depth at times, so if you’re looking for stunningly realistic renditions of these sports you will be disappointed. So keep in mind that none of these games are pushed to their full extent. In Golf, you wont play for eighteen holes and in Baseball you dont have 9-Innings. Its probably a good thing, because if you really get into it youll find yourself tired after a while, wanting to sit sown and just use the joy stick. The music is surprisingly good. Definitely fits the style of the game very well.
Wii Sports uses the Mii (a digital avatar that you can create and customize from the consoles Wii Channel interface) which is another added bonus because it is the only game I know of that you will have a use for your Mii. So, each person that plays the game can have their own character and it also keeps track of your skill Levels in each of sports you play. You will also use your Mii’s in other game modes such as THE FITNESS TEST.
Tennis is arguably the best game out of the five. Six out of the eight people I played with preferred this game. You can play one to four player matches, but I strongly suggest a large TV and plenty of room for groups larger than two players. If not your going to be knocking out your teammates instead of helping them out! So its your basic tennis game first to 45 wins and you can play a single match, best of three and best of five. You use the controllers EXACTLY as you would use the rackets. So the NERF tennis racket (Sold Separately) Works great with game. It is very realistic hitting the ball too. If the ball is coming on the left side of you have to swing on the left side of your body, same thing on the right. That also goes for serving the ball and close to the net hits when you should be swinging over handed.
Baseball is an ok game, just because this is one of the games that lacks depth. It’s just a two player game that has one mode and you get to play three innings. You also only get to pitch and hit the ball, all the fielding is done by the computer. But the pitch and hitting makes up for the game depth because of how much fun and involving each is! To hit the ball you have to stand in the batters stance and swing the remote like it’s a bat. It also matters how fast you are swinging, type of pitch, and whether your hitting it early or late. With the pitch, you have to stand in the pitching stance and throw over handed. This also matters on how fast you throw and what button combos you hit. For example, hold down the A button and you will throw a curve ball; if you just throw and hit no button it will be a fast ball.
Bowling is one of the only games that will not wear you down. It’s a four player game that goes all the way threw 10 frames. It is pretty much just like real bowling, Nintendo did a great job with this game. So you have to stand in front of the TV in the bowling stance. Hold down the B button, pull back your arm, then swing forward, and release the B button to throw the ball. A twist of the wrist one way or another will also put a spin on the ball. One hidden thing I found was; if you release the B button just at the right time while your swinging back, and then you throw the ball at the Miis behind you, they scatter like scared sheep.
Golf is a four player game that is fun for the once in awhile playing. It has four modes you can play, three hole games with three levels of difficulty, and one nine hole game on the hardest setting. The problem is, if you get a group of friends playing the 9 hole game the game could drag on for a few hours. The other problem is, putting. Putting is extremely difficult and sometimes when using the clubs, the Wii sensor does not always pick up your swing. Your best bet, if you want to play this game on a regular basis, is to pick up the NERF sports set. That way you have a golf club you’re swinging instead of just the controller. With that accessory, I found it to be alot easier.
Boxing, in my opinion, is the best game out of the five (my father in-law feels the same way). Every time he comes over he has to box me (which unfortunately is more than I would like lol). So basically there’s a career mode and a VS mode. The career mode never leads to anything, except for, higher rank players; never a final boss or title shot. But the VS mode is good for taking out your aggressions on unwanted house guests with out all the drama. To play this game you use the Wii controller and the numb-chuck controller. You put one in each hand and just start punching. You can also use your hands to protect your face when being punched by the other player. There are boxing glove controllers that have been released. Unfortunately, I have not got a pair yet, but Im sure they would be a great edition to this game.
There are also two more modes to this game; THE FITNESS TEST and TRAINING. The Fitness Test lets you play three random games once a day. Depending on how well you do in each of these games it will determine your Wii age. It also keeps an average of your Wii age. Just for an example, my Wii age is 29 and my real age is 26, and my wife’s Wii age is 48 and her real age is 24. It all determines on your speed, stamina and balance. Training is exactly what it says it is. You basically have three mini games you can play in each sport to improve your skills. Just for an example, Tennis you can hit balls against the wall to yourself, like racket ball, by hitting balls from a machine and practice returning balls inside the court.
To wrap it up Wii Sports is a great game for the whole family to play. It offers interacting with each other and spending quality time with other people while playing a video game; which a lot of people cant get out of traditional games. Overall, I would rate this game an 8 out of 10, just for the play it again and again and again fact. Using the Wii Remote is what really makes playing these games a treat. After all, this console was built for games like this. Just beware if you’re a husband looking to get this console and game for your family. Be prepared to give your wife nightly neck and shoulder massages from Wii play.
Thanks got your time
